Looking for an unforgettable alpine traverse in Rocky Mountain National Park? The Chapin, Chiquita and Ypsilon day hike, or CCY as it’s referred to by the locals, delivers huge views, sweeping tundra terrain, and a rewarding 3-summit experience away from the crowds of Longs Peak. This challenging route links together 3 prominent peaks along the Continental Divide, offering a full day of high-altitude adventure. We’ll begin before sunrise with an alpine start and hit the trail early to maximize our weather window. The route climbs steadily through forest before breaking out into expansive alpine tundra. Here, we’ll catch breathtaking morning light and panoramic views of the Mummy Range, Longs Peak, and the Never Summer Range. As we gain elevation, the terrain becomes steeper and more rugged, with sustained climbing and route-finding across rocky ridgelines. Weather permitting, we’ll summit all three peaks- Chapin Peak, Mount Chiquita and Ypsilon Mountain- while moving across one of the most scenic alpine traverses in the Park. Along the way, we’ll stop for breaks, snacks, photos, and plenty of opportunities to take in the dramatic alpine scenery. If time allows after a day of amazing hiking, we’ll drive a backroad to the famous Alpine Visitor Center, and make our way back to Estes Park on Trail Ridge Road.
